Manuel Harlan

Although I’d been making photos for almost as long as I can remember, as a young adult I was convinced that  my real talents were on the stage, and so after graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama I spent most of the 1990’s trying to build a career as an actor.  I first starting using a camera professionally when I was offered the opportunity to work as a location scout – researching and photographing possible locations for Stanley Kubrick’s last film Eyes Wide Shut. It was following this experience  that I decided to combine my love of theatre and photography by dedicating myself to performing arts photography.

I gradually honed my skills by observing and working for anyone who was kind enough to have me in small-scale venues, until I received my first ‘proper’ commission from the director Matthew Warchus to photograph his production of The Unexpected Man for the RSC in 1998 – a professional relationship that I’m pleased  to say continues to this day.

Since then, I’ve built up a client list that includes the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Sonia Friedman Productions, the Royal Court, Hampstead Theatre, the Lyric Hammersmith, Chichester Festival Theatre, English National Opera and the Bridge Theatre. I am also proud to be an associate artist of the Old Vic Theatre.
